Voles, also called meadow mice or field mice, are compact rodents with stocky bodies, short legs, and short tails. Their eyes are small and their ears are partially hidden. They are usually brown or gray, though many color variations exist. Voles eat a wide variety of plants, most frequently grasses and broad leaved plants. In late summer and fall, they store seeds, tubers, bulbs, and rhizomes. They eat bark at times, primarily in fall and winter, and will eat crops, especially when their populations are high. Voles do great damage to root systems and can ruin lawns, golf courses, and ground covers. They are the bane of many commercial growers and residential gardeners.
How to locate vole nests:
The most easily identifiable sign of voles is an extensive surface runway system with numerous burrow openings. Voles construct well-defined, visible tunnels, or "runways" at or near the surface, about two inches wide. Vegetation near well-traveled tunnels may be clipped close to the ground. Feces and small pieces of vegetation are found in the tunnels. Eliminate weeds, ground cover, and litter in and around crops, lawns, and cultivated areas to reduce the capacity of these areas to support voles. Lawn and turf should be mowed regularly.
How to identify damage from a vole:
Voles may also cause extensive damage to orchards, ornamentals, and tree plantings due to their girdling of seedlings and mature trees. You will see this right at the soil line. Girdling damage usually occurs in fall and winter. Look closely for girdling and gnaw marks.
How to spray BOBBEX-R to deter voles:
Bobbex-R Animal Repellent is a foliar spray. Apply directly on the leaf, stem, and root system of the plant. Use Bobbex-R to protect your lawn, flower bulbs, and garden plants from voles. Spray BOBBEX-R directly into the vole tunnel openings. BOBBEX-R Animal Repellent is all natural, environmentally friendly, and will not harm humans, pets, birds or aquatic life. Most importantly, it will not wash off!
Bobbex-R Animal Repellent makes a great bulb dip program to prevent burrowing herbivores from smelling and discovering your wintered bulbs. Using Bobbex-R as a bulb protector will give your bulbs a chance to survive when first planted and throughout the winter. Voles use their keen sense of smell to find roots and bulbs underground. Bobbex-R creates an aromatic barrier around the bulb and prevents these animals from discovering the bulb. Simply follow these instructions:
Remove all loose and dried plant tissue around the bulbs
Dip bulbs in straight concentrated Bobbex-R Animal Repellent (right out of the bottle). Allow bulbs to soak for 3 to 5 minutes.
Remove bulbs from concentrate and allow them to air dry.
