Chipmunks – A  Pesky Nuisance

Chipmunks’ diets consist primarily of grains, nuts, berries, flower bulbs, seeds, and mushrooms. They cause problems when they eat tender plant shoots and leaves. Chipmunks naturally dig looking for roots and tubers, ruining landscapes by digging holes around your lawn and gardens. You will often find chipmunks gathering seeds from underneath bird feeders. When present in large numbers, they can also cause structural damage by burrowing under patios, stairs, retention walls, or foundations. Most often chipmunks are simply a nuisance.

How to Identify Chipmunk Damage

Look closely when identifying chipmunk damage – it can often be mistaken for squirrels or voles. Damage may occur in your lawn and gardens due to pilfering chipmunks uprooting your plants and flowers.

Other Signs of Chipmunks

Chipmunk tracks are typical rodent tracks showing four toes on the front feet and five on the rear. Chipmunk scat is a round, pellet type excrement usually around  1/4″ in size.
